Choose Your Coach

Hall of Fame Coach Tom Landry once said, “A coach is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, who has you see what you don’t want to see, so you can be who you have always known you could be.” You don’t always get to choose your coach in athletics. As a matter of fact, it is usually the other way around.

Yet in our spiritual walks, Scripture challenges us to choose wisdom as our coach. Proverbs 8 is an invitation to join wisdom’s team. From verse four to verse thirty-six, wisdom is personified as a woman speaking in the first person, essentially extending a personal invitation to learn from her.

Wisdom will tell you what you don’t want to hear and help you see what you don’t want to see, so you can become the man you want to be. Here is her invitation:

My children, listen to me, for all who follow my ways are joyful. Listen to my instruction and be wise. Don’t ignore it. Joyful are those who listen to me, watching for me daily at my gates, waiting for me outside my home! (Proverbs 8:32-34)

There is so much in Proverbs 8 I would love to share with you. But the best thing I could say today is to go and read the rest of the chapter with this thought in mind: choose your coach by choosing the very wisdom of God.
