Breaking Trust

Many athletes have been disgraced because of their actions off the field or because they cheated and lied to get an edge or steal a victory. We have seen that disgrace clearly in cycling, track and field, baseball, and football. The irony in the vast majority of these scenarios is that when the athletes were confronted, they responded with lies.

During his fifth-grade year, my son Cooper had a little conflict on the playground. I asked him if he started it or if he was defending himself. I was thankful to hear him say he was defending himself. I told him then, “That is what I hoped to hear. But listen, if I find out you are lying, your punishment is going to be much worse than if you had just owned your actions.”

Breaking trust is a big deal to the health of our relationships. Breaking trust is also a big deal to our Lord.

Proverbs 12:22 states, “The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth.”

For some of these athletes who we felt have lied to us, we will never look at them the same. That is because you can’t trust a liar. Remember, once you break trust, it is nearly impossible to get it back. Although it is painful, speak the truth and keep trust. If you have done wrong, admit it, because the consequences of being found out as a liar can be far greater than your original mistake.
