Being a Man by Being Thankful

Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown writes in his book The Making of a Man, “I’ve met many people who are extremely successful in their careers. Some of them . . . are pretty quick to tell you about all they’ve done. It’s “I, I, I.” . . . They have a difficult time acknowledging the people who helped them along the way. More important, they fail to give God the credit for opening the doors to opportunity and giving them the skill to succeed.”^a

Have you stopped to take a look back at all the people who helped you get where you are today—parents, teachers, coaches, and friends? Each of us has someone who put in a good word on our behalf, made a phone call for us, or put his or her own name on the line, believing in our potential. Some even sacrificed their own positions for our well-being. Jonathan did this for David.

Take a look at 1 Samuel 18:3-4, which states, “Jonathan made a solemn pact with David, because he loved him as he loved himself. Jonathan sealed the pact by taking off his robe and giving it to David, together with his tunic, sword, bow, and belt.” Jonathan gave up the throne for the sake of his friend, David.

Who has put their name on you? It is a humbling thing when another advocates for you. Call, text, or write to tell that person thanks. You’ll be glad you did.
