Act Like You’ve Been There

Tony Dungy, Super Bowl–winning head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, said about their Super Bowl victory, “Our goal was to win a Super Bowl, but also to win in the right way, to be role models to our community, to represent Indianapolis, . . . and the National Football League.” Inherent in this quote is vision: Coach Dungy envisioned not only winning the Super Bowl but also winning it with class and character.

Proverbs 29:18 says, “When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild.” That divine guidance is vision, and successful people know that they need it.

Once successful people receive vision for their lives, they begin to picture the day when they have arrived at that place. When they do get there, they aren’t surprised that they’re successful. They may be overwhelmed by how much success they have, but they are never surprised that they have it. You see, people enjoy success because they have envisioned the victory. Their vision moves them toward success. Andy Stanley says, “Vision is seeing something that could be while being fueled by the conviction that it should be.”

After you receive the vision for your life, lay out a process to get there—mile markers, stepping-stones, and goals. What will it take to reach your destination? How many resources will it take? How do you get there with class, as Coach Dungy did? Start with these two questions: What in my life could be? Better yet, what should be? Get the divine guidance you need by asking the Lord to make his vision for you clear.
