A Person of Influence

People today are desperate for leadership. So often we limit our scope of influence and do not realize that we have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of everyone with whom we come in contact. Everyone is a leader, because someone is always looking up to you no matter who you are. We will use our influence either positively or negatively.

As a young head coach at Florida State, Bobby Bowden came face-to-face with tragedy when one of his players was killed. Feeling the burden of this loss, Bowden took the time to talk to his players about eternity. A young graduate assistant, Mark Richt, was in the back of the locker room when Bowden explained the gospel. It was at that moment, when Bowden was imparting a life-giving message to his team, that Richt was influenced to give his life to Christ.

We need to broaden our vision and realize the influence that we carry to our extended family, friends, and coworkers—even the people we just pass throughout our day.

In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

There are so many people you encounter each and every day, and you need to be mindful of them, seek to serve them, and be a blessing to them. This is the way to cultivate your influence.

You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
