A House Divided

At the halfway point of the 2015 NFL season, Jason La Canfora, of CBS Sports, reported that Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien was interested in the University of Maryland Terrapins head coaching job. After going 9–7 in O’Brien’s first season, the team stumbled out of the gate and consistently failed to live up to their potential during the first half of the 2015 campaign.

If losing wasn’t bad enough, general manager Rick Smith overruled Coach O’Brien’s desire to immediately cut backup quarterback Ryan Mallett after he missed a team charter flight to Miami. Though Mallett was released a few days later, the damage was done. Immediately, the press began to speculate who would be let go first, Smith or O’Brien. You see, even the press knows that when there are factions within an organization, it cannot be successful and thrive.

Mark 3:24-25 states, “A kingdom divided by civil war will collapse. Similarly, a family splintered by feuding will fall apart.” Are you feuding in your home, work, or ministry? If it continues, it won’t be long until there is a huge shift that takes place. If we work to live in unity, we will accomplish more together over the long haul than we will apart in the moment. I want to challenge you to be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem. Remember the Lord’s words that say, “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9, ESV). Work to stay unified, because a house divided makes for a long, losing season.
