A Great Leader

On December 5, 2013, the world lost a great man in South African president Nelson Mandela. The Nobel Peace Prize winner was known as the man who ended the dark days of apartheid in South Africa. Archbishop Desmond Tutu said of him, “He awed everyone as a spectacular embodiment of . . . forgiveness, and he saved our land from the bloodbath that most had predicted would be our lot.”

Mandela had a way of turning hearts, and he had a great impact in both the quantity of lives that he touched and the degree with which he did it. This came because he followed a man much greater than himself, Jesus of Nazareth. You see, as great as Nelson Mandela was, his accomplishments pale in comparison to the greatness of Jesus. Mandela was able to save many people in South Africa because of his efforts to turn the tide, but Jesus has and will save people from every nation, tribe, and tongue from eternal condemnation.

When the angel appeared to Mary in Luke 1:31-32, he said to her, “You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” I love that the angel says, “He will be very great.” What a wonderful statement. Can you imagine being Mary, hearing about her son being very great?

Have you put your trust in Jesus? He is great and greatly to be praised!
