"Sleep Is God’s Invitation"
Sleep Is God’s Invitation
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” (Isaiah 26:3, NLT)
“The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” (Psalm 23:1, NLT)
It is 3 a.m., and you are staring at the ceiling, wishing you could simply turn your mind off.
The darkness has a way of making our worries feel louder. The problems of tomorrow seem bigger. The questions we cannot answer seem heavier. In those moments, sleeplessness can feel like an enemy stealing something precious from us.
But what if those moments could become something different?
What if the hours we spend waiting for sleep could become an opportunity to rest in God?
Sleeplessness reveals what is often hidden during the busyness of the day. It exposes our fears, our striving, and our desire to control what only God can hold. But God reveals our dependence not so that we run away from him but so that we will run to Him. In his presence, we rest in promises like “The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in You” (Isaiah 26:3, NASB).
Peace does not come from having every problem solved. Peace comes from trusting the One who holds every problem.
Perhaps this is why waiting is such an important part of faith. Everyone waits. We wait for answers. We wait for healing. We wait for circumstances to change. And every night, we wait for sleep.
The question is not whether we will wait, but how we will wait.
Will we wait consumed by worry, or will we wait in worship?
The sleepless hours of the night can become an opportunity to turn our hearts toward God. Instead of counting sheep, we can remember that we are the sheep, and our good Shepherd watches over us (Psalm 23:1, NASB).
The Shepherd who cares for us invites us to bring our anxious thoughts to Him.
One practical way to do this is through prayer. When your mind begins to race, remember CAST:
Confess — Bring your sins and struggles honestly before God and receive His grace.
Ask — Present your needs to your Father, trusting His wisdom.
Surrender — Release the worries you cannot control into His faithful hands.
Thank — Remember God’s goodness and the gifts He has already given.
You may still be awake after you pray. You may still be waiting. But there is a difference between lying awake worried and lying awake resting in God’s presence.
Tonight, whether sleep comes quickly or slowly, remember your deepest rest does not ultimately depend on closing your eyes. Your deepest rest comes from trusting the One who holds you while you sleep.
Reflection:
What thoughts or worries tend to take over your mind when you cannot sleep? How can you turn those moments into opportunities to trust God?
Prayer:
Father, when I cannot sleep, help me remember that You never sleep. Teach me to bring my worries to You instead of carrying burdens that belong in Your hands. Help me wait with hope, pray with faith, and rest in Your faithful care. Amen.
