"Sleep Is God’s Gift"
Sleep Is God’s Gift
“It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.” (Psalm 127:2, NLT)
“He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber.” (Psalm 121:3, NLT)
Have you ever wished you could simply buy a good night’s sleep?
People spend billions of dollars each year on mattresses, supplements, gadgets, and medications in the hope of finding the sleep that continually escapes them. Yet sleep has a way of reminding us that some of life’s greatest gifts cannot be purchased, earned, or controlled.
Few stories illustrate this more tragically than that of Michael Jackson. Desperate for sleep while preparing for an exhausting concert tour, he relied on propofol, an anesthetic never intended to replace natural sleep. Though it rendered him unconscious, sleep experts later testified that what he experienced was not true restorative sleep but a drug-induced coma. He was searching for something money could buy but could never provide.
His story is a sobering reminder that sleep is not a commodity. It is a gift.
Scripture beautifully teaches this truth, “It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep” (Psalm 127:2, ESV). This psalm reminds us that while work has its place, anxious striving does not produce the rest our souls desire. Sleep ultimately comes from the gracious hand of our Creator.
Charles Spurgeon painted a picture of God gently placing His fingers upon the eyelids of His children each night. Every night, our heavenly Father invites us to stop striving, release control, and receive His tender care.
Sleep humbles us. No matter how accomplished, intelligent, or wealthy we may be, every evening we are reminded we cannot buy sleep. Sleep is not something we achieve; it is a gift we receive.
Every night, sleep invites us to entrust ourselves to God. We close our eyes, lay aside tomorrow’s responsibilities, and acknowledge that the world will continue without our constant effort.
While we sleep, God remains awake. The psalmist reminds us, “He will not allow your foot to slip; He who watches over you will not slumber.” (Psalm 121:3, NASB). We can rest because he never rests. Our security is not in our striving but in His unfailing care.
Reflection:
What do you find hardest to surrender to God when you lie down at night? How might receiving sleep as a gift help you trust His care more fully?
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of sleep and for the reminder that I do not have to carry the weight of the world through the night. Teach me to surrender my worries, my plans, and my striving into Your capable hands. Help me receive rest as a gift of Your grace. Teach me to trust that while I sleep, You faithfully watch over me. Amen.
