Jesus . . . watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box. Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins. “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.”

Luke 21:1-4

When the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw [Jesus] eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum?” When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

Mark 2:16-17

JESUS OFTEN put himself in situations many would find uncomfortable. He ate with despised sinners and had conversations with immoral women. He even praised those who, like the poor widow, made themselves uncomfortable in order to help others. The truth is, the Christian life was never meant to be comfortable. We are called to take risks in the name of Jesus, in order to bless others and point them to him. Perhaps that means beginning a friendship with someone who is different from you. Maybe it’s giving more than you budgeted for. Each time you step into the discomfort, you learn to trust God a little bit more—perhaps because you need to trust him. What risk might God be calling you to take?
