Tenderness

tenderness - How can I develop a tender heart toward someone who has caused me pain?

LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.

Psalm 40:11

Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.

Philippians 2:1-2

The LORD is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.

Psalm 103:13

WOMEN ARE OFTEN thought to be the more nurturing gender, but that doesn’t mean tenderness always comes naturally to us—especially when we are faced with the difficult task of reacting to those who have caused us pain. However, a tender heart begins with prayer. Sit with God and think about how he has shown you tenderness and compassion. When you realize the depth of God’s care for you, you are better able to care for others. It may take time for your heart to change toward someone who has hurt you, but prayerfully put yourself in her position. What hardships has she faced in life? How might her own unmet needs impact the way she interacts with you? As you consider this person, ask God to change the stubbornness and hardness in your heart into kindness, compassion, and tenderness.
