rest - Why is rest so important for me?

In six days the LORD made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day he stopped working and was refreshed.

Exodus 31:17

The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength.

Psalm 23:1-3

It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

MANY OF US see rest as a luxury we can’t afford. However, God’s Word is clear that we can’t afford not to rest. One of the most important things we can do for our bodies, minds, and souls is to rest with God. When we sit with him quietly, he ministers to us by refreshing our souls. Make time to receive from him. What gives you rest? Reading a book? Going for a run? Cooking? Invite God into that restful activity by praying, “Lord, you are with me in this moment. I am so thankful you care about giving me the rest you know I need.” Work hard and make the most of every opportunity, but don’t forget to prioritize rest. If it’s important to God’s heart, it ought to be important to ours, too.
