A prayer for Grace

When I understand God’s grace, I will be gracious with others

O God,

I have experienced your grace as both a onetime act (your undeserved favor giving me salvation through faith in Jesus) and as a way of life (your ongoing work within me). Grace is your special favor. When I think about how your mercy has changed my life, I am so humbled. Because of your grace, you give me blessings I don’t deserve, and in your mercy, you withhold the punishment my sins do deserve. Let my personal experience with your tenderhearted mercy translate into heartfelt acceptance of others. I pray that you would increase my understanding of your grace so I will be moved to share that same freedom with those around me. Don’t let me stop with one act of kindness, but help me to remember that your grace is an ongoing work in my life. Please develop a spirit of graciousness and mercy in me that consistently spills into the lives of others, so they, too, might be blessed by your special favor.

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Ephesians 2:8-9
