A prayer for Excellence

Why it is important to strive for excellence

Dear God,

I want to be a person of excellence—one who exceeds others’ expectations—for that is a rare thing in this world. Yes, I want to strive for excellence in a life skill, just like a medical doctor trying to exceed expectations might develop a new vaccine that saves people’s lives. But most of all I want to be excellent in the way I live as one of your followers. Please allow me to care deeply about telling the truth, about doing things well and right, about helping those in need. May my pursuit of excellent character give others a glimpse of your character. May my striving inspire them to pursue a purpose beyond themselves. You initiated excellence in the beauty of your creation, and we are called to perpetuate it. I know I display excellence when I consistently model myself after Jesus Christ, who is perfect. Since I will never be perfect in this life, there is always something to strive for!

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. Colossians 3:23-24
