A Prayer About Forgiveness

A prayer about Forgiveness

When I have trouble believing God will forgive me

O gracious God,

You are the one who has ultimately been wronged by my sin, so I come to seek forgiveness from you first. Oh, how I thank you that your forgiveness is not based on the magnitude of my sin but on the magnitude of the forgiver’s love. And so I confess my sin to you as the first step in receiving your forgiveness. I have done something wrong, but because your Son, Jesus, died on the cross to take the punishment for my sin and rose from the dead to show his power over death, you accept my confession and forgive me. There is nothing more I must do. It is too wonderful to believe! When you forgive me, you look at me as though I have never sinned; I become blameless before you. How can that be? Yet you say it is true. Please don’t allow lingering feelings of shame to persuade me otherwise. How I thank you that nothing I’ve done in my past is so bad that your complete and unconditional love can’t forgive it. Only those who don’t want your forgiveness are out of its reach. To you, God, be the glory!

He has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ. . . . As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault. Colossians 1:22
