A prayer about Choices

When I recognize the profound responsibility of my choices

Merciful God,

From the beginning, you have desired a loving relationship with all your people, including me. You long for me to love you in return, though in your wisdom, you knew that I must also have the freedom to choose not to follow you. In my sinful nature, I do that all too often—choosing instead to go my own way. I know this breaks your heart. Oh, how I hate when my sin drives a wedge between us. But it would be even worse if you forced people to love you—if you made us robots with no will of our own. That is surely not love, but coercion. Evil still exists, and sinful people continue to do sinful things because they choose to. But I can choose to love you. I can choose to desire a relationship with you, almighty God. With your help, I can choose to do what is right. And when I do, you draw close to me, our relationship thrives, and Satan loses ground. I look forward to the day when my sinful nature will be vanquished forever. Then I will always choose you out of the deepest desires of my heart. Until that day, help me to overcome sin by choosing to love and obey you.
