A prayer about Addiction

When I struggle with addiction or bad habits

Dear Jesus,

I admit that I am struggling with addictive behaviors. In the moment of temptation, I can easily justify giving in just this once, thinking I have things under control. But I realize that my “one time” has turned into a habit I can’t stop. It now controls me. Ironically, the only way to recover my self-control is to let you control me. Jesus, your control is always for my benefit and for my spiritual growth. When I give you control of my life, you can break the power of any addiction I am struggling with. Thank you! Jesus, I realize that to overcome addiction, I need the consistent support of people who love me enough to hold me accountable. But I also want to hold myself accountable to your way of living. This will keep me close to you so you can work in my life to change my heart and desires. I surrender to your Holy Spirit, and ask you to replace my addictive impulses with life-affirming desires. While it is important that I seek the help of others, it is only with your help that I will ultimately have the power to overcome.

The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23
