A prayer about Tithing

When I wonder if tithing is really necessary

Lord God,

I want to support your work, but it’s difficult to discipline myself to tithe. Sometimes I dismiss tithing as an out-of-date religious law, but I know that’s not true. Your Word has a lot to say about giving. I know that, symbolically, giving the first part of my earnings to you demonstrates that you are my number one priority and that I am grateful for the blessings you have given me. I want to show my commitment to your work and honor you for your provision and faithfulness to me. Help me to develop the self-discipline to maintain a habit of regular tithing. May I give before I spend—that will keep you at the top of my priority list. I know that tithing will also give me the right perspective on the rest of my income. It’s actually all yours, Lord. Teach me not to ask, “How much of ‘my’ money do I need to give to you?” but to ask instead, “How much of your money should I keep?” May I become a cheerful giver, one who feels privileged to support other believers, those in need, and the work of spreading your gospel.

You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” 2 Corinthians 9:7
