A Prayer About Respect

A prayer about Respect

When I want godly respect

Lord God,

Having others respect me is not a bad thing, but when that becomes my ultimate goal, I’m going about my life the wrong way. So often you turn conventional worldly wisdom on its head. For example, your Word tells me that the last will be first and that leaders should not lord it over the ones they lead. Teach me, Lord, that I can’t find respect by demanding it or grabbing for it. Instead, help me to understand that I will gain respect when I serve others rather than seeking to be served, or when I take responsibility for my actions rather than trying to save face in front of others. I will gain respect by speaking up when things are wrong instead of blending in with the group, or when I build others up instead of trying to make myself look good. Cause me to keep my eyes on you and not on myself, so that I will act in a way that brings me respect. But may I seek it for your glory, that others might see you working in me, and not for my own importance.

Those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last. Matthew 20:16
