A Prayer About Gossip
A prayer about Gossip
When I’m tempted to gossip
Father,
I have to confess that it can be fun to gossip. I love to be in on the latest news, and I enjoy connecting with others in conversation. But I know that gossip does not honor you. It’s based on rumors, not facts, and it often damages someone’s reputation rather than building it up. When I gossip, I feel myself judging others and becoming increasingly critical. That’s not what I want, Lord. Please help me as I try to stop my gossip habit. I know that if I don’t add fuel, the fire will go out. When I’m with others who are speaking hurtful rumors, prompt me to change the subject or say something kind about the person who’s the target of the rumors. I pray that the compassionate words I say might allow your grace to break through to those around me and perhaps even reach the ears of those I defend. Guard my lips and cause me to speak words of healing instead of hurt.
The Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.” 1 Peter 3:10
