A Prayer About Fasting

A prayer about Fasting

When I consider fasting

Lord,

Fasting has not been a regular part of my life, but when I read the Bible I see that fasting has frequently been a part of worship. Jesus talked about it when he was on earth and assumed God’s people would fast. I don’t want to discount fasting, but I need your wisdom to discern how to incorporate it into my life. I can see that abstaining from food might help me to focus on you, even allowing me to have a sharper mind that’s especially receptive to what you have to say. Teach me how fasting can improve my communication with you by eliminating my usual routine and freeing me to spend more time with you. As I consider fasting, Lord, I ask that you would use it to break through the barriers that keep me from giving myself to you wholeheartedly. Use this discipline to draw me to yourself, for your glory.

[Jesus said,] “When you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18
