A prayer about Work - Building with God

MY GRACIOUS FATHER,

Sometimes I work too much—not just at a place of employment but also in my home, at church, and in the community. I want to get things done. Often, unfortunately, the price is time spent in relationships, recreation, and rejuvenation. Yet even in those settings I find something to keep me busy. Perhaps the underlying cause, as this passage suggests, is that I believe everything depends on my efforts. But you must build the house, protect the city, and provide food. I know this doesn’t mean that I sit back and watch, hoping everything gets done—I should be a responsible worker. But trust in you should be the bottom line for all my efforts. So help me remember your values as I build my home, guard my family, labor to support myself and others, serve at church and in the community, and rest. I must remember that everything doesn’t rely on me; I can do only what I can do and leave the results to you.

Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. . . . It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones. Psalm 127:1-2
