A Prayer About Vocation
A prayer about Vocation - Working for God
GRACIOUS LORD,
As I get ready to leave the house and go to work, I don’t have the best attitude. It’s not that I don’t appreciate being employed or enjoy what I do; I’m just not enthusiastic about it. Thank you, Lord, for the opportunity to earn a living. Many others are not nearly as fortunate. I know that at Creation, you put Adam in the Garden and gave him a job to do (before the Fall), so you sanction work—it is not a result of sin. But the daily and weekly grind is getting to me, plus the fact that some of my coworkers, especially my immediate superior, can get on my nerves. So when I read Paul’s strong statement to the Colossian church, I feel guilty because I certainly have not been working willingly, as though I were working for you. Please change my attitude, Lord, my approach to my vocation. Help me see it not merely as a means to an end—the paycheck—but as a way to do your work and honor you.
Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. Colossians 3:23-24
