A prayer about Overconfidence - Trusting my Leader

DEAR LORD,

I heard an interchange between a mother and her three-year-old. “Don’t climb on that!” said the mom. “I don’t want you to fall and get hurt!” The little girl’s response: “I won’t, I promise.” Fully confident with her three-year-old perspective and way of thinking, the daughter knew she could “promise” that everything would be fine. Obviously, the mother knew better, for so many reasons. I thought that quite funny, but then I considered how I act and respond to you. Often I think or speak confidently about what my actions will produce, about what will happen in the future. Even when you have warned me about certain choices and where they will lead, I seem to say, “That won’t happen. I promise!” Forgive me, God, for my hubris, thinking that I know best. I am a finite and sinful human being—an immature one as well. Because I know what you are like from your Word and what you have done in the past, I should know better. I need to listen, trust, submit, and obey.

The LORD will work out his plans for my life—for your faithful love, O LORD, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me. Psalm 138:8
