A Prayer About Law

A prayer about Law - Living with grace

DEAR LORD,

You know I’ve always been a rule-keeper. I was taught to play by the rules and obey the laws. That’s good. But when it affects my relationship with you, I have a problem. At those times, I begin to think I can please you and get you to love me more by making sure to do what’s right. Watching my actions is a way of keeping score. I think I’m winning if I’m more obedient, more righteous, and if I pray, read the Bible, go to church, and do other Christian activities more than anyone else. And while I’m busy working hard, I look down on others who are less conscientious, deeming them as less spiritual. Yet the law can’t save me; I can’t earn your approval. Your favor is totally undeserved. In fact, if I were to receive what I deserve, even after doing every possible religious ritual and decree, you’d send me straight to hell. Please break my default setting of legalism and help me focus on loving you with all my heart.

No one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. . . . We are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law. Romans 3:20, 28
