A Prayer About Giving Thanks

A prayer about Giving Thanks - Appreciating God’s presence

DEAR LORD,

A series of recent events have me reeling. I feel as if I’m in the surf and I keep getting knocked down by one hard wave after another. Just as I gain my balance and think I’m making progress, wham, down I go. So I’m struggling, Lord, with having a positive attitude. I’ve heard more than once that we should be grateful for everything that happens, bad and good. But I know that can’t be right. I shouldn’t praise you for natural disasters, personal tragedy, and sin. If I did that, I would be phony, just mouthing the words because I think it’s what’s expected. I am thankful in these circumstances, however. I’m grateful for you and your love and for all you have done for me in the past, especially for Jesus. I’m profoundly thankful for where you are taking me and that my future is secure. And right now, Lord, in the middle of this frustration and pain, I am so grateful that I am not alone—you are with me in every setback and step forward.

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
