A prayer about Death - Embracing my victory

HEAVENLY FATHER,

I am tired of going to funerals and memorial services. And so discouraging is the fact that the older I get, the more I’ll attend. Several have involved tragic, unexpected deaths. Because the deceased were believers, their services were filled with warm recollections, Scripture, and hope. At these occasions, I become introspective and think of my own passing. I don’t like to dwell on it, but I know that death is inevitable—for some soon and others later, but all eventually. I think of how people will react and how I’ll be remembered. And I feel profoundly sad. Father, give me the confidence of Paul, who could proclaim his assurance of eternal life with you. I believe that, but not as strongly as I think I should. Death, the great enemy, seems so mysterious and final. But Jesus conquered sin and death—the only person to die and come back to tell us about it. He won the victory and “gives us victory over sin and death.” Help me, Lord.

“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57
