DEAR JESUS,

What a fascinating collection of men you chose to be your original twelve disciples. If I had been assembling a team or building an organization to effectively spread a message, I would have recruited powerful people with wealth, position, and influence (political and religious). But you chose ordinary folks from the opposite side of society, including fishermen (blue-collar workers of the day), a tax collector (shunned and hated by most), and a zealot (focused on overthrowing Rome). And what a mix of personalities they were, including Peter, the brash, outspoken one who would deny knowing you; James and John, hotheaded brothers; Thomas, skeptical and doubting; Judas Iscariot, a thief and betrayer. You called them, led them, taught them, loved them, and transformed their lives—and they changed the world. That is so encouraging! I am ordinary, too, with no great position in society, no power or money to do much on my own. But you have called me, and I am your disciple. Use and empower me, I pray, even today, to spread your love and change my world.

He appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles. They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach, giving them authority to cast out demons. Mark 3:14-15
