A Prayer About Temptation

When I feel the urge to do wrong

LOVING GOD,

Please keep me from overconfidence in my ability to withstand temptation. I need always to depend on you. Every day I am presented with opportunities to make wrong choices. These may include compromising my integrity, not telling the truth, stealing, gossiping, seeking revenge, meeting my needs through another person, elevating myself, or becoming involved in sexual immorality. I am a fallible, sinful human being, vulnerable to these pressures. I know the temptations do not come from you but from Satan and my sinful nature. At times, they are strong and can seem almost irresistible. But you have promised to not allow me to be tempted more than I can stand. I claim that promise, Lord, knowing you are faithful and true. You also said that with each temptation you will provide an escape route, an obvious way to reject or avoid it. So when I am tempted, help me to be grateful for the opportunity. Thank you, God, for trusting me this much! Then please show me the way out and give me the courage and power to take it.

If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Corinthians 10:12-13
