A Prayer About Satisfaction

When I don’t feel fulfilled

HOLY SPIRIT,

You live in me and are transforming me to be more and more like Christ. You meet my most crucial need for salvation and also give me meaning and purpose for living. So why would I ever look elsewhere for satisfaction? But I do when I begin to believe the world’s lies. Good advertisers know that first they have to create a feeling of dissatisfaction before presenting their “solution.” Children see ads for toys and pester Mom and Dad for them; then, just days after being received with delight, the gifts lay discarded or broken. Parents become frustrated at their children’s immaturity, but I often do the same, thinking that I need the new car or wardrobe or electronic wonder or romantic encounter to be happy and fulfilled. But that’s a lie, and I should know better—because I know you. As David proclaimed, “Your unfailing love is better than life itself,” and only you can satisfy. Please help me, Spirit of God, to resist the sales pitches and find my fulfillment in you and your will.

Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer. You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy. Psalm 63:3-5
