A Prayer About Overcoming

When I feel pressed and oppressed

LORD IN HEAVEN,

“Faith is the victory that overcomes the world”—so goes the old song based on this passage in 1 John. I need to remember the truth of those words these days because the world seems to be closing in. Daily I battle against worldly values, ideas, pressures, and temptations. But you have promised that “every child of God defeats this evil world.” Our victory comes through faith. I claim that promise, Lord. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that by trusting in him I have been forgiven and made completely new. Your Spirit lives in me, empowering me to resist Satan and to do what pleases you. I also know that you are all powerful—nothing can stand against you—and your mighty power is available to me. I know I cannot do this on my own. So right now I ask you to strengthen me to stand up to all that the world throws at me. I want to be an overcomer.

Every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:4-5
