A Prayer About Living For God

When I want to put my faith into practice

HOLY GOD,

Help me live my life for you! I seem to be careful to live like a Christ follower when my pastors, teachers, and mentors are near. That’s certainly how I behaved as a child; when Mom or Dad was nearby, I usually did what I was told, at least while they were watching. As an adult, however, I have learned that I have to be self-disciplined and take responsibility for my actions. The same is true in the spiritual area—my relationship with you. I know that the true test of my faith is when I am on my own, away from my spiritual parents. I take this matter seriously, Lord, and I’m working at it, trying to obey you “with deep reverence and fear.” But I know, thankfully, that it’s not all up to me—you are working in me, beginning with my desires—helping me want to obey you. Then you give me the strength, empowering me to do what you want. Together we move forward in life as I do what pleases you.

Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Philippians 2:12-13
