A Prayer About Gratitude

A prayer about Gratitude

When my outlook needs adjusting

SAVIOR,

I’m not usually a negative person, but these days being positive is difficult, considering all the world’s problems and my personal challenges. I confess that I have been looking inward on my struggles and outward on the fallen and broken planet. I have almost a daily “Woe is me” pity party. Instead, I need to look upward, to you, remembering your promises and all that you have given and are giving to me. When I do that, my whole outlook changes, and I am overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude for who you are and for what you have done. Thank you, Lord! Paul told the Thessalonian believers (and me) to “be thankful in all circumstances.” For a while I thought I had to praise and thank you for everything that happened to, in, and around me, including pain, sorrow, sinful acts, and terrible tragedies. That could happen only if I faked thankfulness. Instead, you want us to thank you in everything we face, grateful for who you are and for your perfect plans. Please keep me looking up.

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
