A Prayer About Government

When I question my civil leaders

SOVEREIGN GOD,

Like most people, I complain about the government and my elected representatives—local, state, and national. And in the last general election, many of the candidates I supported lost. So I have been quick to bad-mouth the current political leaders. Your Word clearly states, however, that I should give honor and respect to those who are in authority. What’s more, I should pray for them! Please forgive me for being so disrespectful, and help me to be a loyal and godly citizen, no matter what my political persuasion. Right now I pray for the president, the vice president, the cabinet, my senators and congressional representatives, the supreme court justices, my governor and other state officials, and my mayor and city officials. I pray that they will trust in you, that you will keep them from harm and corruption, and that they will govern well. Bless their families, too. Thank you for allowing me to live in a country where I can express my faith openly, without fear. I want to be a good citizen and, in so doing, bring glory to your name.

Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. . . . Give respect and honor to those who are in authority. Romans 13:1, 7
