A Prayer About Fun

When I begin to think too seriously about myself and life

DEAR LORD,

Everything seems to be a big deal these days and oh so serious—major decisions, relationship drama, national politics, international crises, and many other concerns and worries—and life has taken on a gray, somber hue. Today I passed an elementary school playground with children at recess. They were swinging, playing, laughing, and running, just enjoying the weather and chasing each other around. And I remembered how I used to be just like those kids, finding humor in most situations, goofing off and laughing with friends, and having fun. When did life get so grim? I want to exult in your love, to rejoice in your presence, and dance. I know you have a sense of humor; after all, you created the platypus . . . and me. Yes, theology is deep, and we dare not take your Word lightly; serious problems need serious solutions. But you have said that I should be happy in you and that you expect rejoicing. Please open my eyes to your joyful work; help me lighten up!

Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, LORD. They rejoice all day long in your wonderful reputation. They exult in your righteousness. Psalm 89:15-16
