A Prayer About Freedom

A prayer about Freedom

When I feel constrained

DEAR GOD,

Ever since I was child, I have resisted restraints—wanting to be free, to make my own choices and go my own way. And I made a habit of pushing against the walls, testing the limits, especially during adolescence. I guess that’s human nature—we don’t want anyone telling us what we can and cannot do. For a while, I thought that you and the church were trying to limit my freedom with all the commandments, Bible teachings, and expectations. But the more I distanced myself from those “restraining” forces and pushed to be “free,” the more I found myself enslaved to bad habits and outside pressures. Then I met Christ, the Truth, and he set me truly free. I am now free from the penalty and power of sin and free to choose right, to live in a way that honors you. I know you allow me the freedom to choose to sin, but I don’t want to. And you’ve empowered me to be able to make godly, life-giving choices. Thank you, Lord, for setting me free.

You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. . . . So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. John 8:32, 36
