A Prayer About Children

When I relate to the youngest generation

CHRIST JESUS,

I love babies, toddlers, and kids—watching them crawl, toddle, and walk; hearing their questions and detailed explanations. I am also enthralled when I observe their wonder as they discover their abilities and your creation. I welcome them into my world, as you told your disciples to do. But I am convicted by your words about causing “one of these little ones who trusts in [you] to fall into sin.” Yes, they are sinners, but they are so innocent and vulnerable. And they look up to people like me, especially those with whom I spend lots of time teaching and coaching. These children are absorbing my values, repeating my words and expressions, and copying my actions. I remember, as a child, admiring the older kid in the neighborhood, my Sunday school teacher, and special aunts and uncles. I know that I have the holy responsibility of living out what it means to follow you, of being a Jesus role model. So I pray that when children watch me, may they see someone who loves, serves, gives, and puts you first.

Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, . . . “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Matthew 18:2-3, 5-6
