The Gift of Dirt and Sweat

Imagine yourself in a hole, covered in dirt, gripping a shovel in both hands. You strike hard into the earth and then lift the shovel, dropping the dirt onto a rising pile above. You look down, take a breath, then dig again.

What’s your motivation to dig? If you’re digging for a paycheck, there’s certainly some reward. If it’s to improve your home, your motivation may rise. But if you’re digging for someone in need, someone who can’t dig for himself, then your heart for the work should feel different altogether.

No one likes getting too close to someone covered in dirt and sweat. But if the dirt and sweat are the product of kindness and love, then there’s no more beautiful sight to see.

Work for a paycheck. Work for family and home. But also labor for those who can only respond in gratitude. Each drop of sweat will be all the payment you need.
