President Harry S. Truman had a sign on his desk that read, The Buck Stops Here. This referred to another phrase, passing the buck, which meant avoiding responsibility for your actions. Truman was taking responsibility for his.

As you start out on the road toward character change, you’ll notice some resistance. Most often, that resistance will come from you.

One way to recognize this resistance is to admit how often you pass the buck. When something needs doing, do you do it yourself, or do you always expect others to do it for you? When something goes wrong, do you immediately take ownership for your role, or do you blame everyone else? These are warning signs that you’re probably not ready for change.

A person of character is one who not only accepts responsibility but looks for it. So if you want to pursue the change that matters, the buck shouldn’t just stop here; the buck should begin here.
