Seeing What Matters

Seeing What Matters

Viktor Frankl was a Jewish psychiatrist held captive in the Nazi concentration camps during World War II. In his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, he describes how the Nazis stripped each person of their humanity—horrible living conditions, little food, unbearable labor, physical abuse, and the constant threat of death.

How he stayed alive when others died may seem miraculous. His circumstances were about the worst they could be. He had no control over his life. But he did have control over one thing.

His perspective.

No one could take from him the freedom to choose his attitude, or how he chose to see the world. When he had nothing else left, what mattered was his freedom to choose his perspective. And that gave him a reason to live.

What do you see when you look at your world? You can choose to see what matters.

“Blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.” —Matthew 13:16
