Friends Who Stick with You

You’ve hit rock bottom.

One bad day turned into two. A week of funk became a month. A month of misery has become a season with no end in sight.

You’ve alienated most of those around you. Your fair-weather friends fled long ago. Even your family is at a loss and gives you your space. Most everyone has left you alone to wallow.

Except those friends who stick with you.

It may be one special friend, perhaps two. They’ll talk or they’ll listen, depending on what you can handle. As you share your jumbled feelings, they’ll stare with a serious tenderness that makes it clear that they are sticking around, even when most others would probably leave.

On the journey to what matters, you will eventually hit a wall. And when you do, you’ll need someone who won’t run ahead with the others. They’ll join you on the side of the road, bind your wounds, and help you move again.

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. —Proverbs 18:24
