Reignited For Joy

Reignited for Joy

Therefore you now have sorrow. But I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

John 16:22 mev

If we struggle with depression, joy might not be at the forefront of our minds. Well-meaning friends might even go as far as to say that if the person experiencing depression would “just get out and do something, they will feel better.” However, it’s not that easy. We probably know that getting out and socializing might help lift our mood. At the same time, the symptoms of depression prevent us from being motivated to reach out and participate in joyful events.

To help reignite joy in our lives, we can remember some old truths. First, true joy comes from God. In Christ, we have a joy that cannot be taken away. Because God is ever present with us, we can always embrace the joy that comes from him.

Second, as Psalm 30:5 says, “weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” No matter how much pain or worry we are experiencing, we can be comforted and encouraged with the truth that there is a season for everything, including joy.

Third, we can rejoice in the knowledge that God hears us. The Bible is full of examples of times when God’s people called to him and he answered. We can experience an abiding joy that is not dependent on our temporary circumstances, a joy that can help us persevere through them.

Admittedly, when we’re in the middle of depressive symptoms it can be difficult to remember that we have God, the source of all joy, with us. But we can be intentional in remembering that his mercies are new each day, which means each morning offers the opportunity for joy, despite our circumstances.

Joy is the serious business of Heaven.

C. S. Lewis

Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.
