Anchors In The Storm

We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain.

Hebrews 6:19 esv

Along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States, hurricanes are part of the environment. The heavy winds, downpours, and occasional tornadoes that hurricanes bring can cause great damage. Hurricanes have the power to tear roofs off buildings, knock down trees and power lines, and flood major streets. Whenever possible, people will pull their boats from the sea in advance of the storm. But in some cases, a boat stays in the water with an anchor that prevents it from being tossed around in the ocean. When that anchor is secure, not even the strongest currents can move the boat.

We need anchors in our lives. Even when things appear calm on the surface, we can be drifting from God without realizing it. For believers, our anchors are God and his promises. We need these anchors for three reasons: (1) There will be storms. Hardship will come. Whether the storm is a job loss, a sickness or any number of difficulties we face, we need to be rooted securely so that we will not be tossed by the current. (2) We tend to drift. If we are honest with ourselves, the events in our world can shift our understanding of who God is. As we shift, we are either moving toward God or away from him. (3) We pick easy relief. Persevering through hardship is hard work. We can be tempted to take the easy route, which can take different forms—a relationship, a quick symptom-reliever, or the latest fad.

In the turbulence of life, we need anchors to root us in truth, hope, and peace. God will be our strength when we feel we cannot hold on, and his promises are sure and steadfast.

Without Christ there is no hope.
