John 7 - NIV God’s Justice Bible
7:1–4 The Right Time Crowds will be in Jerusalem for one of the most important religious festivals. Jesus’ unbelieving brothers want to use the opportunity to stage a campaign of miracles, earning the acclaim of the masses. Jesus rejects this plan. This is not how he will respond to the murderous antagonism his ministry has raised.
7:14–52 Divided Opinions Undercurrents of murderous hate, unbelief, fear and irony mark this festival celebrating God’s provision during the years in the wilderness. Guardians of the law are ready to break the law to get rid of Jesus. Meanwhile the ignorant recognize the truth, and despite angry controversy no one is able to capture Jesus. In his teaching Jesus challenges his audience’s sense of justice (vv. 17–24). Whose justice will prevail in the ongoing confrontation between Jesus and the religious leaders?
