10:14–18 The Sacrifice of the Good Shepherd What makes Jesus the good shepherd is his concern for his sheep, voluntarily giving his life for their sake (vv. 11, 15, 17, 18). God’s saving justice is not accomplished by self-preservation, nor is his primary concern the safety of his Son.

10:22–30 His Sheep Know His Voice The religious leaders have refused to hear God’s voice in the Scriptures, in the person of Jesus and in his works (5:36, 39–40; 8:43–47). Not only are they faulty shepherds, but they do not even belong to God’s flock. Jesus’ claim that others outside of Israel will listen to his voice (10:16) challenges ethnic and religious barriers. Of course, long ago God promised to bless the whole world through Abraham’s family (Gen 12:1–3); now, in Jesus, that promise is being fulfilled.
