Why are traditions important?

Exodus 12:14“This is a day to remember. Each year, from generation to generation, you must celebrate it as a special festival to the Lord. This is a law for all time.”

God endorses traditions, especially those that have spiritual significance. Traditions promote togetherness and help us remember all that God has done for us. The greatest inheritance we can provide for succeeding generations is the tradition of reminding them frequently of God’s blessings and warnings.

Esther 9:27-28The Jews throughout the realm agreed to inaugurate this tradition and to pass it on to their descendants . . . . This Festival of Purim would never cease to be celebrated among the Jews, nor would the memory of what happened ever die out among their descendants.

Traditions strengthen our faith and remind us of God’s mighty deliverance, as well as of the people, like Esther and Mordecai, who were willing to honor God with their lives.

Joel 1:3“Tell your children about it in the years to come, and let your children tell their children. Pass the story down from generation to generation.”

Joel tells of a horrible plague of locusts that had come to destroy the land. It was a sign of coming judgment at the hands of the Assyrians and Chaldeans. Joel tells his people to pass the story of this awful event down from generation to generation, a tradition of sorts, to remind them to obey God and thus avoid his judgment.
