How are sinful passions related to our other struggles with sin?

Matthew 13:22The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced.

Romans 13:11-14This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.

1 John 2:15-17Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

God’s Word tells us not to love or be committed to the world. We’ve got our hands full loving God and our neighbor. Loving the world only draws us away from focused attention to our Creator and those around us and into a set of values and pursuits that can destroy us. The world, the flesh, and the devil conspire to distract us from the things of God and from our actual good. As intense as these passions often seem, it helps to remember that they are passing away and will eventually be less than a memory.
