What are the roles of husbands and wives in marriage?

Ephesians 5:21-33Further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. . . . For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean . . . So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

God created specific roles for men and women in the context of marriage, but these roles have often become confused. A wife is to submit to the husband’s spiritual leadership, and a husband is to serve his wife sacrificially, just as Jesus loves and sacrificed for his church. These roles balance each other and are rarely a problem when both the husband and wife seek to follow Jesus in their home. In each role, the spouse is required to put aside his or her own agendas to focus first on meeting the needs of his or her mate. Any other specific roles (paying bills, working at a job, cooking, cleaning, doing yardwork, changing diapers, buying a car) should be decided by the couple.
