What is the difference between taking needed rest and being lazy?

Psalm 139:3You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do.

Proverbs 12:11A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies has no sense.

Proverbs 6:10-11A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.

2 Thessalonians 3:11We hear that some of you are living idle lives, refusing to work and meddling in other people’s business.

Scripture reminds us that laziness can be a sin, while rest is a reward for hard work. Someday we will be asked to give an accounting for how we spent our time in this life. Laziness gives excuses for why we can’t get things done. Rest is the reward of work well done.

Psalm 73:12Look at these wicked people—enjoying a life of ease while their riches multiply.

Isaiah 47:8“Listen to this, you pleasure-loving kingdom, living at ease and feeling secure. You say, ‘I am the only one, and there is no other. I will never be a widow or lose my children.’”

2 Thessalonians 3:6Now, dear brothers and sisters, we give you this command in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: Stay away from all believers who live idle lives and don’t follow the tradition they received from us.

When leisure becomes the center of our lifestyle, it displays selfishness and laziness. We should rest when it is time for God to re-create or recharge us.
