Why don’t I ever seem to have enough?

Ecclesiastes 5:10-11Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness! The more you have, the more people come to help you spend it. So what good is wealth—except perhaps to watch it slip through your fingers!

Ecclesiastes 10:19A party gives laughter, wine gives happiness, and money gives everything!

It seems that it is our nature as humans to believe that if we just had more money, we could be happy and fix almost any problem. But when we get more, we will want even more, and we will never seem to have enough.

Proverbs 21:17Those who love pleasure become poor; those who love wine and luxury will never be rich.

If we review our spending habits closely, we will likely be surprised at how much we are spending on frivolous pursuits, pleasure, and possessions we don’t really need.

Haggai 1:4“Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins?”

When we’re not managing our money by God’s priorities, we will feel as though we never have enough. God’s priorities first ask “Where can I help?” not “What can I get?”

Luke 12:15Then he [Jesus] said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”

It is easy for us to look to money to bring us security, but this is false thinking. Our money is never secure on earth and can disappear suddenly. Only in heaven will our treasures be completely secure.

Mark 10:17, 21-22As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” . . . Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell, and he went away very sad, for he had many possessions.

We accumulate money because we believe that money and wealth can really make us happier. But imagine how much more joyful and productive we could be if we set our minds to accumulating treasure in heaven!
